Heat pumps got a marketing makeover in 2024 — but most South Bay homeowners I talk to still think of them as 'that thing my friend in Phoenix has that doesn't work below 30°F.' The new inverter units are a different animal.
What I see most often on a heat pump installation & service call
- Sizing. heat pumps need tighter Manual J than legacy AC. Oversized = humidity issues, undersized = aux heat strips burning electricity.
- Aux heat misconfigured. in our climate, aux strips should rarely come on. If yours runs every cold morning, the lockout temp is set wrong.
- Defrost cycle confusion. heat pumps periodically swap to cooling mode for a couple minutes to clear frost. Sounds wrong, isn't.
- Refrigerant charge. newer units use R-454B or R-410A. Wrong-charged systems run inefficiently and short-cycle.
